Air transport is one of the few industries, if not the only industry, where the nationality of the undertaking is relevant, if not essential, for the performance of its operations and where such nationality is -still- predominantly based on nationality criteria of ownership and control.
This article on “The Unique Link Between an Airline and a State” explores the origins of airlines ‘of’ a State from the Chicago Convention. It analyses the rationale and current status of this link between a State and an airline and the subsequent allocation of nationality.
